The team for the Facebook project has finally been assembled and work has begun on this game. Here is a list of roles for the people working on this game, along with the country they live in:
            • Lead Programmer - USA
            • Programmer - Argentina
            • Design Artist - USA
            • Audio Design - UK
            • Game Design - USA
We are all excited to begin work on this game and we have a long road ahead of us. When we are almost ready to begin alpha testing, we will start posting some details about the game itself on our website, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Until then, we will post a notice if we need new members to join our team.

Right now, we need another artist to join this Facebook project. See the July 29, 2011 Open Positions post for details.

Progress is also being made on iOS Game Project #1 ("Angry Birds" style game). The team is being assembled and we should be ready to begin work on this project soon.

iOS Game Project #2 (simple, controversial game) is being pushed to the back burner for now while we focus on the other two projects. But there is a rumor that a secret team is typing keyboards in the dark and slowly beginning work on this game...

All projects that were announced prior to April 18, 2011 have been put on hold indefinitely.

Artist Needed for Facebook Game Project
We need someone to create the graphics for our Facebook game. The art you create will be based off existing designs, but you will also have the opportunity to do some of your own design work. You will be replacing our former 3D modeler who had to step away from the project for work-related reasons. Our current pipeline is set up for the creation of 3D models which are then converted into 2D images. However, we can rearrange our pipeline to accommodate your style. You can specialize in 3D art, or 2D art using 3D isometric style

This is a fantasy themed free-to-play (or "freemium") MMO game for Facebook. We plan to monetize using the Zynga model at first, then implement more advanced strategies as our user base increases. If you are interested in adding your artistic talent to our team, you can contact us for more information about the game. See the Why Join? section for more information about compensation for team members.

iOS Game Project #1 ("Angry Birds" style game)

Programmer - Physics-based programming will be very important for this game, so a programmer with experience or interest in this area would be welcome. This game may be coded using Flash, or we are considering using cocos2d for iPhone. This will be a single-player game, so no complex networking will be needed. Check out Paul's blog@Wildbunny for some great tutorials on physics programming that are especially well-suited for this project.

2D Artist - This game uses a side-scrolling 2D platformer art style, so we need someone who can work in this style. It is important that the characters used in the game have a unique style that is clean and flashy. So we need an artist who can develop a clear vision for the characters in this game.

For a summary of this project, see the relevant news article.

iOS Game Project #2 (simple, controversial game)

Programmer - No complex physics programming is needed for this game. There will be AI interactions on a large scale, so we need someone who can develop complex AI scripting. We would like this game to support both single-player and multiplayer support for up to 4 players, either via a Wi-Fi network and possibly with online matchmaking support. We are considering using Flash or cocos2d for iPhone.

2D Artist - This game will feature a top-down perspective, so we are planning to use isometric style 2D art. The graphical style will be extremely simple (think stick figures and wireframes). The challenge will be making this simple style appear slick and pretty in a minimalist sort of way. A programmer with experience in creating graphics could fill this role.

For a summary of this project, see the relevant news article.

iOS Game Project #2

A Second New Title for iPhone / iPad / iPod Touch
Another iOS game project is brewing. This one is even simpler than iOS Project #1 and can be completed before any of the other projects. A team as small as three or four people is being assembled to begin work on this game. We may use existing programmers and artists from our team, but we are always willing to consider new talent. Contact us if you are interesting in joining this project.

This will be an action game with some real-time strategy elements. This game will use extremely simple graphics to achieve a clean, minimalist visual style. The coding work will also be relatively basic; no complex physics programming here. The visual style is so simple that even a programmer with a basic artistic understanding could complete the game art. The game concept may be considered somewhat controversial to some people. For a point of reference, think of how the original Grand Theft Auto game was received.

iOS Game Project #1

New Project for the iPhone / iPad / iPod Touch
Along with the Facebook game, we are beginning a separate game project to make an iOS title. This will be a physics-based 2D action-puzzle game that could be compared to Angry Birds. A small team is being formed for this project. Some talent will be brought over from the Facebook team. However, as most folks are busy with the Facebook game, we could use some new team members to join this project.

Currently, programmers are in the greatest need. This is a physics-based game, so experience or interest in physics coding would be helpful. We are considering using cocos2d for iPhone. Art help is also welcome. The game art will be similar to a 2D platform game. We need an artist who can define a unique and appealing style for the game's characters.

Additional Programming - We could use help with coding features for the Facebook game.

Additional Art (2D or 3D) - The team has room for a 2D sprite artist or a 3D modeler. Character and environment design work may be possible, but mostly we could use help with creating animated characters, buildings, and terrain. We are using an isometric style for this game, so 2D artists would need to be able to work in this style.

New Project to Use PlayStation Move

posted Mar 23, 2011 1:04 PM by Eric Piper   [ updated Mar 23, 2011 1:26 PM ]

The project mentioned earlier this month is being revised to utilize the PlayStation Move motion controller. This change came as a result of some findings at the 2011 GDC. Specifically, the move.me software application showed great potential in fulfilling the hardware requirements of our project.

Although it is not perfect, we feel that the PlayStation Move will meet our needs better than other popular motion controller choices that currently exist, such as the Kinect for Xbox 360 or the Nintendo Wii Remote. Utilizing existing peripheral technology will be much more efficient for our team, as it allows us to avoid "reinventing the wheel" by designing a whole new peripheral device.

We are currently looking at the move.me software application and the Move motion controller and assessing how this technology can be adapted into our game. If you have interest or experience with 3D art & animation or programming and would like to be involved in this project, contact us.

101 Productions at GDC 2011

posted Mar 23, 2011 1:04 PM by Eric Piper   [ updated Mar 23, 2011 1:27 PM ]

Our team will be represented this year at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. Not by an exhibit booth, but by a gangly 20-something male who will be stalking the expo corridors looking for programmers and animators who stray too far from the herd. If you will be at the expo between March 2nd - 5th, be wary - especially when you are at the watering hole.

A representative from 101 Productions will be at the expo to recruit people with interest/experience in game development. If you are at the expo to find work with one of the big game developers, you might want to keep in mind that collaborating on an independent game project is a great way to gain experience and get a title under your belt. These are things that the big companies look for when hiring. If you get discouraged during your search, consider taking some time to first hone your skills on an independent project like ours before returning to the conference next year to show off a more impressive portfolio.

Even if you are already working in the gaming industry, one of our projects might interest you. If so, contributing your work and knowledge as a "hobby project" on the side is a perfectly acceptable way to become a team member. Our team's structure is informal and flexible enough to accept help in varying capacities.

If you are at the expo and looking for a fun project and a forward-thinking team to join, just search for the tallest white male you can find. If he is not the rep from 101 Productions, maybe he can peer across the room and spot another tall white guy for you.

Facebook Game in Development

posted Mar 23, 2011 1:02 PM by Eric Piper   [ updated Mar 23, 2011 1:27 PM ]

Work has begun on our latest title: a game which will be released as a Facebook app. This game will be developed concurrently with the aforementioned "new peripheral technology" project. This Facebook game is much simpler than the other project and will be quicker to produce. The target release date is in 2012, although the speed at which this project will be completed depends on the team's performance and how many members the project attracts.

We are looking for new team members to help out on this project. Software engineering, programming, graphic design and networking contributions are needed. Experience with MySQL and Facebook applications is particularly helpful. Contact us if you are interested in collaborating on this project.

New Peripheral Hardware in Development

posted Mar 23, 2011 1:02 PM by Eric Piper   [ updated Jul 14, 2011 12:01 PM ]

Our team is beginning work on the development of new peripheral technology for use with a future game title. This title will be designed to accept player input from something more than traditional controller technology. But we are taking a different approach from "virtual reality" peripherals that have been developed before (see image below). Our research aims to overcome current technological limitations and design new hardware to meet the needs of the project.

If you have experience or interest in electronic engineering, telemetry methods, or a related area, contact 101 Productions about getting involved in this project. Likewise, we are also recruiting 3D animators, software engineers, and programmers to work on the software side of the project. This project has a long-term time frame for development which includes considerable time for research and development.
